“I had an upbringing in a working-class family where money was rarely discussed. We lived contentedly with what we needed, buying only when we had the finances to do so. The notion of not using other people's money was instilled in me, a belief that, while well-intentioned, held me back from exploring greater possibilities.

We followed societal expectations, the big costly wedding, getting a mortgage for a home, and having kids all with a happy retirement in our sites. It never came. Taking a closer look at the household cleaning products, personal hygiene items, and makeup products we use is equally vital. A conscious switch to organic and toxin-free alternatives can have a profound impact on our well-being. (Avoid products with synthetic musk, as they are known endocrine disruptors that can wreak havoc on menopause hormonal balance).

Minimizing plastic usage is essential for long-term health. Plastic particles can accumulate in our bodies over time, negatively affecting the immune and gut systems. Taking steps to reduce plastic consumption contributes to a healthier environment and, ultimately, a healthier self.

I love that we are a diverse group with our challenges yet I am also aware that if I need help, not many will be able to drop everything and come to my aid. Just as I know some days I am unable to do the same for other friends. Sue's Story

Sue's decision to leave the corporate world and take over the flower shop revealed the potential for reinvention and new beginnings in midlife. However, her experience also underscored the importance of a crucial step often overlooked by many - a skills audit. Before venturing into new endeavors, it is essential to identify and acknowledge what we do not know, to seek the necessary skills and knowledge for success. Without due diligence, rash decisions can lead to potential failures.

“I was at the top of my game in the corporate world. I had reached the glass ceiling. The long hours, the commute to work which wasted time, and my tenuous place in the company finally got to me. I quit. My kids had flown the nest, yet my husband was still working. I felt I was too young to retire. When I did the math and worked out how much I would have to survive on I she lived to 100. (Included was the rise in the cost of living and the decrease in pension), I found there was just no way to sit still.

I decided to take over the flower shop on the local high street and used part of my retirement fund. Within a short space of time, it became apparent that it had been a mistake. Running my own business needed a new set of skills, some I had limited access to, others I had just not foreseen. As I watched my hard-earned cash disappear, I saw that I had forgotten the one fundamental step - A skills audit. You have to know what you do not know.

Luckily, I took the time to breathe and reassess. I sought the help of friends with business knowledge, access to potential clients, and a marketing expert. More cash went out the door but slowly I turned a corner. It has been such a stressful time that as soon as I clawed back my money, I sold.
